Recognize Anaphylaxis and Check the EpiPen
Before using an EpiPen, make sure the person is having a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Common signs include trouble breathing, throat swelling, or dizziness from low blood pressure.
Before injecting, check the device:
- Make sure the medication is not expired
- Look at the window. The liquid should be clear and colourless
- Hold the EpiPen in a firm fist, keeping fingers away from both ends

Remove the Blue Safety Cap
The blue safety cap prevents the injector from activating by accident.
To prepare the EpiPen:
- Hold the injector firmly in your fist
- Pull the blue safety cap straight up
- Do not twist the cap
Once the cap is removed, the EpiPen is armed and ready to use.

Find the Correct Injection Site
The correct muscle is the vastus lateralis, located on the outer thigh.
- Large muscle
- Good blood supply
- Safe distance from major nerves and blood vessels
Clothing usually does not need to be removed.
